Several manufacturers are doing this today. The best way to reduce weight is to reduce compression height. This also reduces pin flex and allows the piston to be much more rigid. Weight is also reduced from using a much shorter wrist pin. The short skirt pistons offer significantly reduced weight due to the short skirt length. Short skirt “box-style” pistons are available from several piston suppliers and offer engine builders yet another alternative for stroker engines that need additional crankshaft clearance, or high revving engines that can benefit from reduced piston/pin weight. On engines like the LS1 that have a crankshaft position sensor reluctor wheel on the crank, piston clearance can be a problem when stroke is increased. That, in turn, requires redesigned pistons that can accommodate a longer stroke crankshaft. But lengthening the stroke of the crankshaft requires longer connecting rods and raising the location of the wrist pins in the pistons. There’s no substitute for cubic inches when it comes to adding power and torque.
